Why the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon is the Perfect Race for First-Time Runners

All Articles

Thinking about signing up for your first half marathon? You’re not alone - and you’re in the right place. The idea of running 13.1 miles can be intimidating, but the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon is specifically designed to support and empower beginners every step of the way.

From a flat, forgiving route to full race-day support, this event is the perfect introduction to long-distance running.

A Flat Course That’s Beginner Friendly

Let’s start with the route. The TTP Cambridge Half Marathon is known for being one of the flattest half marathon courses in the UK, with less than 320 feet of elevation gain. If you're looking to avoid hills (and save your legs), this course makes for a smooth and confidence-boosting experience.

Plus, you’ll be treated to stunning views of  the University of Cambridge’s historic colleges, parks, and scenic city streets, making it one of the most picturesque races you’ll ever run.

A Generous Cut-Off Time That Welcomes Everyone

Worried about your pace? Don’t be. You’ll have 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete the course from the moment you cross the start line. That’s roughly a 16-minute mile pace - about the speed of a brisk walk.

This extended time window means runners, joggers, and walkers alike can take part without pressure. And if you do happen to fall behind, our friendly sweeper van will transport you safely back to the event village.

A Supportive and Energising Race Atmosphere

From the moment you arrive, you’ll feel the support. The course features live DJs, music zones, and cheer squads that keep your spirits high and your motivation strong. You’ll find clearly marked mile signs, five water stations, and plenty of on-course toilets, so your focus can stay on the run - not logistics.

Race Day Athlete Hub

We know first-time runners have questions and pre-race nerves. That’s why we host two pre-race briefings, including an online seminar about three weeks before race day. These sessions walk you through the entire event - from race morning logistics to top tips - and give you the chance to ask any questions.

On the weekend itself, the Athlete Hub will have your back. Forgot safety pins? Need an energy gel or banana? We’ve got you. We also host fun extras like sign-making for supporters and face painting, helping you and your cheer squad get fully into the race-day spirit.

Built for Inclusion - At Every Level

Inclusivity is at the core of our event. We’ve implemented policies that support a diverse group of runners, including pregnancy deferrals, women-only toilets with free period products, and women’s-cut finisher T-shirts. Prizes are awarded equally across all categories, ensuring a fair and welcoming race for everyone. You can read our full policy here.

Pacing Support - No Matter Your Speed

Whether you have a time goal or just want help pacing yourself, our team of pacers is there to guide you. With pacing support from 1 hour 30 minutes through to 3 hours 15 minutes, you’ll find someone to follow at your speed.

🏅 Race Day Perks for All Finishers

Even if this is your first and only half marathon, we make sure it's worth it. Every finisher receives:

  • A premium medal
  • A high-quality race T-shirt
  • An official goodie bag
  • All race-day photos for free

You’ll walk away with not just pride, but memories and mementos to match.

If you’re looking for the best first half marathon in the UK, the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon offers the perfect blend of support, scenery, and accessibility. Whether you’re walking, jogging, or running, you’ll be part of a welcoming and unforgettable race-day experience.
