Towing Procedure

Following a request from the organisers of the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon (CHM) Cambridgeshire County Council (CCC) have agreed that a trial towing scheme can be introduced at this year’s event.

The trial will cover Trumpington Street and Barton Road only, see Appendix 1.  These roads are ‘high risk’ areas for the event meaning that illegally parked vehicles could cause a significant issue for the event potentially leading to delays or cancellation.

Outside of the trial zone any vehicles causing an obstruction / Illegally parked that are deemed to be a hazard to the event / general public will be removed under police powers.

Background

In a previous edition of the event a vehicle was Illegally parked on Trumpington Street, meaning that the runners would not be able to safely pass the vehicle.

Despite attempts to locate the owner the organisers were left with no option but to request, via the police, for the vehicle to be removed.  The vehicle in question was removed with just 2 minutes to spare prior to race start.

All parties agreed this was too tight, that there was no margin for error, and that the procedure was not fit for purpose.

Tow Away Date & Time Frame

Sunday 8 March - 07:00-14:00

On the Day Procedure

  • Organisers will employ police officers to assess the trial tow-away zone between the hours of 06:00-07:00, making every possible attempt to locate the owners of any vehicles causing an obstruction
  • From 07:00 CCC officials will be present on site to authorise any removals.  The organisers will confirm that attempts to contact owners have been unsuccessful and that they intend to remove the vehicle(s)
  • The organiser’s towing contractor will remove the vehicle(s).  The planned locations for removal are any of the northside roads for Barton Road and Brookside for Trumpington Street
  • CCC will install signage on the nearest lamp/signpost highlighting where the vehicle has been removed to.  CCC to ensure this is recorded within their parking enforcement framework.  The organiser to ensure this is passed to the police and recorded within their records
